Euro Cup 2024: England and France striving for top place at Euro 2024
The qualifying drive for Germany Euro Cup won't wrap up until November but frequent nations are on the edge of booking their vouchers for Germany, while several strong contenders have already emerged to lift the award next summer. Reigning champions Italy is hopeful about their prospects of being around to protect their title, despite missing out on the 2022 World Cup.

While the beaten finalists at Wembley two years ago, England, look more than skilled in going one step better this time around. France is looking hard once again, though, while Portugal is undeniably flying under new trainer Roberto Martinez. Spain, Croatia, Belgium and Netherlands will fancy their odds but what about the hosts, Germany, who have hurt a surprise decline over the past few years?
Netherlands Euro Cup
Ronald Koeman's second curse as manager couldn't have got off to a more disturbing start, with the Netherlands routed 4-0 by France after yielding three times in the opening 21 minutes. However, the Dutch are now well on course to qualify for Euro 2024, thanks in no small part to wins over Greece and the Republic and Ireland. Netherlands do not lack quality, with Virgil van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Ake in defence, Denzel Dumfries a real threat down the right side, and Cody Gakpo exciting in attack. Their return fixture with the French will tell us much about their true asset.
Scotland Euro Cup
After being beaten by Ukraine in the World Cup play-offs, Scotland has come raid back, winning all five of their qualifiers for Euro Cup 2024 to date. Scott McTominay has been the star of the show with six goals, including a bright double in a shock 2-0 win over Spain. However, the Scots also pulled off a dramatic comeback in Oslo, meshing twice in the final three minutes of normal time to record a 2-1 win over Norway. If Steve Clarke's side pick up just two more points from their last three games, the Tartan Army will be in Germany next summer.
Germany Euro Cup
To say Germany's arrangements for Euro 2024 are not going to plan would be a colossal irony. After failing unhappily to reach the knockout stage of last year's World Cup, Die Mannschaft went into total meltdown, losing four of their six games in 2023 which led to Hansi Flick being fired as trainer after a shocking 4-1 defeat at home to Japan.
Rudi Voller has taken over on a temporary root while the likes of Julian Nagelsmann are now being linked with the job. One thing is clear, though, whoever takes over is going to have a serious job on his hands. Germany Euro Cup side still has some good players as underlined by a morale-boosting friendly win over a Kylian Mbappe-less France but remains very much a work in progress.
Austria Euro Cup
Austria is almost exactly through to Euro 2024 after a hugely inspiring 3-1 win in Sweden, with veteran demonstrator Marko Arnautovic on target for the fans. After a tough start to life under Ralf Rangnick that included demotion to the second tier of the Nations League, the team has developed nicely under the former Manchester United boss and would likely progress as winners of Group F if they overthrow Belgium in Vienna next month.
Croatia Euro Cup
Croatia have reacted brilliantly well to the concern of a shock later equaliser to Wales in their opening qualifier, winning three games on the spin to take control of Euro Cup Group D. Turkey are level on points with Zlatko Dalic's men but the third-place finishers at the 2022 World Cup have both a game in hand and already won in Bursa. Captain Luka Modric isn't getting any younger but Croatia simply cannot be written off, given their practical quality, impressive flexibility and amazing tendency for upsetting the chances.
Belgium Euro Cup
Belgium's 2022 World Cup drive was a complete disaster, with star man Kevin De Bruyne causing quite the argument by effectively sacking many of his team-mates as too old before the competition began. The predictable dressing-room divide played a big part in the Red Devils' humbling group-stage elimination as did Romelu Lukaku's poor final, in fairness.
The good news for Belgium, though, is Lukaku has relived his shooting boots, with the new Roma forward having already counted eight times in qualifying, while Domenico Tedesco is doing a fine job of revitalising the squad. The Belgians are winning under their new boss and should win their group if they avoid defeat in Austria next month. Euro fans can buy Euro Cup Final Tickets at exclusively discounted prices.
Spain Euro Cup
What to make of one of the outsider Spain sides in recent memory? In the past year alone, they've put seven past Costa Rica and Georgia and yet also been made look powerless by Morocco and Scotland. Qualification has been somewhat complicated by an amazing defeat in Glasgow that midfielder Rodri did not take well, but La Roja should still trip through.
Alvaro Morata may not promise goals but he is in good form at the instant, while Spain Euro Cup 2024 boasts an implausible crop of Barcelona youngsters, including Pedri (20), Gavi (19), Alejandro Balde (19) and Lamine Yamal (16). Nobody will want to end up in the same group as Luis de la Fuente's Nations League winners, who recall the ability to hog the ball against the best in the world.
Portugal Euro Cup
Portugal is playing flawlessly under new trainer Roberto Martinez. They're six from six in qualifying, having scored 24 times without an answer. However, it's worth pointing out that they are in one of the competition's easiest groups, while it also remains to be seen if former Martinez is talented in delivering in a major competition, given how he wasted Belgium's 'Golden Generation'.
The important, one imagines, will be how he handles the Cristiano Ronaldo query for Germany Euro Cup. Goncalo Ramos deserves to start ahead of the 38-year-old, who is now plying his skill in Saudi Arabia, but Martinez is likely to stick with Ronaldo, for better or for worse.
England Euro Cup
Is football lastly going to come 'home'? Well, you surely wouldn't bet against Gareth Southgate's side winning in Germany next year. They've got the talent and, at this phase, they've also got the skill, having reached the last Euro Cup Final. Qualification is also pretty much in the bag, after build-up 13 points from five games. However, the one remaining anxiety is whether Southgate is too loyal to certain players, such as Harry Maguire, and too traditional to unleash a midfield of Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden on next summer's Euro.
France Euro Cup
The highest-ranked European side in the world right now and with a good cause. France boasts a frankly absurdly deep pool of players, a mix of experts who have seen, done and won it all, and shamefully exciting youngsters. There are no flaws in this team they've won all five of their group games to date without yielding a single goal, beating the Netherlands 4-0 all the way. The 2022 World Cup runners-up are very much the side to beat at Euro Cup 2024.
