Theo Dan said the Romania Rugby World Cup team want me
From Old Alleynians to Saracens, the 22-year-old hooker describes his trip across the seven tiers of English rugby. For a sense of how swiftly Theo Dan has broken through at Saracens, one of the hooker’s first projects this season was a September friendly against his parent club in the colours of Ampthill. With a fair wind, an amazing year may end at the Rugby World Cup via a Twickenham final.
Either way, Dan has risen rapidly. His path to this stage has taken a switch from centre to the front row, featuring the humiliating setbacks one might expect of that transition. Supported by his Romanian family, the 22-year-old’s RWC player has already spanned seven tiers of England’s club pyramid. Among several sliding doors, instants were the 2016 Wellington festival.
Playing for Saracens Under-16s, and visualising becoming the next Brad Barritt, Dan was positive to stick his head into the middle of the scrum. It was the last thing I desired to hear; he confesses. But I slowly got used to the fact that my life in the back was over. Dan was not picturing it easily, which is as well. His alma mater, Alleyn’s School in Dulwich, did not have rugby union games, which is how a second turning point arrived.
A 17-year-old Dan hoping to play Rugby World Cup for Romania
A 17-year-old Dan, who had left Blackheath to focus on his GCSEs, needed rugby games. Kelly Brown, then one of Saracens’ academy trainers, rang up Old Alleynians and organised a front-row training in London 2 South West; the seventh partition. It suited the way I played because I was pretty violent and hostile and it was good fun, Dan explains. Until I turned 18, I wasn’t allowed to scrum against men regardless of whether I had been hired off or not.
I did the first half of that season scrummaging in the back row and tossing into line-outs. When I turned 18, on Boxing Day, it was a case of, ‘Right, do you want to have a go at hooker?’ I was getting crumbling in the scrum. The learning curve would steepen with the next loan, to Bishop’s Stortford in National One. ‘Cinderford away’ are two words capable of inducing nerves, even for grizzled forwards.
It was almost funny, he says. There was so much fog that you would be upright on the 22 and you couldn’t see the posts. I remember thinking that the signs were pretty threatening. Cinderford is known for having a big, nasty pack and I was getting thumped in the scrum. We were going in reverse, my line-outs weren’t going great and I got bent off after about 20 minutes. Romania wants me, but the England Rugby World Cup side is the dream
There will have been a pile of kindness messages this season, which has seen Dan seize his chances superbly since being recalled from Ampthill’s contest campaign. Though he is unwilling to pick out a highlight, it was particularly sustaining to muscle match-winning scrum penalties in the final throes against Exeter Chiefs. Another dramatic win over Bristol Bears at the end of January, in which Dan underway and scored a pushover try.
Julian Montoya and Dan Sheehan are stated as standard-bearers at hooker, though there is an invaluable mentor closer to home. Dan labels Jamie George as the best set-piece hooker in the world, with Tom Woolstencroft, Kapeli Pifeleti and Ethan Lewis also guiding him as part of a cooperative group. It may be that Mark McCall opts for the experience of George and Woolstencroft for the Premiership play-offs.
Steve Borthwick’s ethics are so high
Dan, an England Under-20 Rugby World Cup player, is acutely aware of the need to round out his game. That said, Steve Borthwick’s morals are “super-strengths” and are known to be intriguing. According to Kevin Sorrell, the Saracens coach, Dan’s explosive “bite” in interaction is difficult to instil in players. What, then, of the next step up a ladder that began at Old Alleynians?
Reasonably, Dan prefers to avoid France’s Rugby World Cup talk with the Premiership knockouts pending. At some stage, though, a decision on his national team will need to be made because Romania has been in touch as well. They asked if I could play before I had a Premiership appearance for Sarries, Dan says. But England has been my dream since I was a kid and I’ve always desired to try and found myself at the Premiership level first.
