Who’s ready for France Rugby World Cup 2023
In the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup, City A.M. has put together a barometer in corporation with City Index to look at which rugby players are hot and not in the contest to be part of the quadrennial event in France later this year. London Irish back-row Tom Pearson had a lightning game for his club in their win against Northampton Saints last weekend. The 23-year-old counted for the hosts but was universal across the pitch.

England has been refining their back-row stability over the Six Nations and if head trainer Steve Borthwick is seeking a player suggestive of the likes of Ireland’s Josh van der Flier or Frenchman Francois Cros, Pearson can be an RWC bolter for England. After an injury-hit appearance in England, South African Handre Pollard has started driving for Leicester Tigers. The Boks will want him on form for the France Rugby World Cup.
With news of France’s back-up no10 Matthieu Jalibert facing injury worries, fellow fly-half Antoine Hastoy has a gamble to stake his right. Johnny Sexton has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to groin damage. The Ireland RWC No10 will then be in a health race. England’s Jack Willis is likely to sign a new deal with Toulouse, which would reject him from the national set-up on the citizenship rule.

Any new team at RWC 2023?
Chile is the only side contending at this year’s World Cup who have never contested at the global platform before in their past. They are capable of the competition after defeating the United States of America in a two-legged North American qualifier play-off, winning 52-51 on collective. In fact, for the first time in Rugby World Cup history, there will be no North American sides in the contest.
We know that the US will stage the contest in 2031 after the future Rugby World Cup hosts were broadcast last year. Portugal will be contending in the RWC for the second time in their history. In 2007 the last time the World Cup was in France, they contested in the pool stages, finishing lowest of a group that also included New Zealand, Scotland, Italy, and Romania. They did attain one losing bonus point against Romania.
France Rugby World Cup referees
Keep up to date with the competition officials for the mega event. Rugby world appreciates that the boards of RWC referees as well as referee supporters, and television match officials (TMO) for France will be named mid to late May, with world rugby making the formal declaration then. And if any referees make it beyond the World Cup group steps to referee any of the knock-out matches in France.
You may be questioning who the world cup referees were for the preceding finals. In 2019, at the Yokohama Stadium, Jerome Garces of France had the whistle for South Africa’s 32-12 triumph over England. And Garces will be at the world cup in 2023 too, but with a different ability, the former referee is now part of Fabien Galthie's backroom squad with the French national rugby team.
The previous Rugby World Cup Final referees were 2019, Jerome Garces of France, 2015 Nigel Owens of Wales, 2011 Craig Joubert of South Africa, 2007 Alain Rolland of Ireland, 2003 Andre Watson of South Africa, in 1999 Andre Watson of South Africa, in 1995 Ed Morrison of England, in 1991 Derek Bevan of Wales and in 1987 Kerry Fitzgerald of Australia. Remember, the mediators and supporters for all games have to be neutral they cannot be allied to the same union as either of the rival sides and this must be the case for the final. When the panel of match executives are named for the France Rugby World Cup 2023, we will update this to include them. And we will be updating the list of referees throughout the competition as we head into the knock-out series of action.
Who will win the RWC 2023?
With the Six Nations Contest now at a close, the attention of the rugby-playing world is turning to the Rugby World Cup 2023, which kicks off in September. With less than six months to go until the first game in Paris, now is the time to take a full look at the sides fighting for this year’s championship.
France Rugby World Cup side
Fresh from humbling England at Twickenham in the Six Nations, France will enter the RWC 2023 as favourites. Although they’ve never won the world cup, France has been building towards this competition for the last four years. Plus, in Antoine Dupont, they have an absolute star of the game who was selected as the 2021 world player of the year.
New Zealand Rugby World Cup team
Winners in 1987, 2011 and 2015, New Zealand is reasonably one of the favourites to lift the Webb Ellis Cup this October. With skilled and talented players including top stars such as Sam Cane and Beauden Barrett, the New Zealand rugby side will be tough to beat. Despite struggling in the early part of 2022, they ended the year with a seven-match undefeated run. Plus, they once again claimed triumph in the Rugby Championship, beating South Africa, Argentina, and Australia.
South Africa Rugby World Cup team
The 2019 RWC winners have a good gamble of repeating their victory in 2023. Still led by inspiring captain Siya Kolisi and following an inspiring series win against the British and Irish Lions in 2021, the South Africa rugby team remain a force to be counted with. This year’s edition of the Rugby World Cup will go a long way toward shaping their status for the competition.
Ireland Rugby World Cup side
Fresh from a twinkling performance in the Six Nations and excellently led by coach Andy Farrell, Ireland is the best side in the world, according to the world standings. However, although they’ll certainly head into the competition as one of the favourites, two factors may hold them back. Firstly, although Ireland has touched the quarter-final stage of the RWC seven times in the past, they have never grown past it.
As a result, they’ve never had to contract with the pressure of performing on the world’s major stage. Secondly, although they’re world number one, the draw has been mostly unkind to Ireland, who must face South Africa and Scotland in their group. Growth from this stage and they’ll then likely face either New Zealand or France in the RWC quarter-finals. If Ireland is to win the Rugby World Cup 2023, they’ll have to do it the tough way.
