New Zealand Vs Italy: Hopes for Razor as New Zealand RWC coach should be removed
There is no hesitation that Scott Robertson is worthy of the New Zealand head training job after six traditional super rugby titles with the Crusaders. Robertson is the applicant who can uplift and rally support behind the New Zealand rugby side, but hopes shouldn’t be held hard for an immediate return to world supremacy. If Robertson is selected for 2024 and beyond, he will receive a New Zealand side stripped bare of skill and many world-class troupes after the Rugby World Cup 2023.

The last of a golden group featuring Aaron Smith, Beauden Barrett, Sam Whitelock, and Brodie Retallick are all moving on. Players such as Richie Mo’unga and Shannon Frizell are already confirmed exits despite having time on their teams to continue playing test rugby. The list of New Zealand players locked in for 2024 onward is short with question marks over starting excellence players such as Rieko and Akira Ioane, Damian McKenzie, Scott Barrett, and Will Jordan.
Up to 31 players are off deal after 2023 and the grade of many is unknown. Should they do stellar work to retain the top names, depth could still be worn very thin. New Zealand Rugby is staring off the edge of a cliff in terms of talent preservation. The task will be the biggest trial an All Blacks coach has ever faced should many of these players walk. If anyone can rebuild New Zealand into a juggernaut it will be Robertson.
New Zealand head trainer during France RWC 2023
But that’s not to say he will, while the very wildlife of re-building means shipping losses as the team grows to where it needs to be. Much of Robertson’s instant success in the role will be dependent on who will still be here for him as a trainer. The ideal state for Robertson was to be the New Zealand head coach during the France Rugby World Cup 2023 cycle, with the talent and experience here now to make the best of this window.
The U20 crop of 2011 is making their last bravo, his super rugby champion champions players are in the group, as well as many he trained for the world rugby U20 championship in 2015. That has not ensued and the NZR may live to regret it in France later this year. This RWC was the one for New Zealand to make the most of with Robertson’s training genius.
The last 10 years of New Zealand U20 results have been the iceberg under the water the ship is headed towards. For more know about New Zealand Rugby World Cup Tickets.
Just two contests, one trained by Robertson in 2015, and the other in 2017, have been enclosed by varying results and new standards for worst-ever placing. Robertson’s 2016 side who were looking to go back-to-back blown-up up to a then-record worst result of 5th place after a pool phase loss to Ireland. Just what the playing pool that Robertson will receive looks like remains to be seen, with big question marks over who is continuing and who is going.
Robertson is important for France Rugby World Cup
Equally, who will be alongside Robertson is important. If Robertson can learn one thing from present coach Ian Foster’s tenure it is that the helpers matter greatly at the global level where margins are tiny and the details are everything. Foster’s self-selected side of John Plumtree, Brad Mooar, Greg Feek and Scott McLeod didn’t last. The two helpers let go, Plumtree and Mooar, came into New Zealand with limited head training experience and none at the global level.
Both had just taken head training roles, at the Hurricanes and Scarlets, before deserting them to jump into Foster’s team. Both had a wide history as assistants but neither had won anything in expert rugby as head coaches. Once Crusaders forwards coach Jason Ryan and former Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt were brought in, the All Blacks began to snap at the back end of 2022.
Schmidt brought an implausible amount of pedigree into the room, having trained Ireland for many years winning multiple Six Nations titles and turning Ireland into the number one graded side in the world at one point. His influence was clear to see as closely all aspects of New Zealand's attacking play improved whilst non-performing players who kept starting under Foster’s old training staff quickly fell down the pecking order.
Razor era
The side around Robertson will be critical, if not more important than Robertson himself, chiefly if the New Zealand side is going to be a childish one. Outside of winning it this year, Eddie Jones would love taking the Bledisloe Cup back under Robertson’s guard, outfoxing the hyped-up new kid on the block in his first year of test rugby. The magic touch of Robertson seems to turn everything to gold. For more about knowing Italy Rugby World Cup Tickets.
He will need that Midas touch in spades to continue to accrue awards and the ultimate prize, the Rugby World Cup down the line in 2027. But the Razor era could just as easily be as stormy as Foster’s run if he isn’t afforded the same resources, which is a big question mark sitting over New Zealand Rugby whether he is given the work or not.
Past of rugby union games between New Zealand and Italy RWC sides
New Zealand first played against Italy at the opening game of the initial Rugby World Cup in 1987, thrashing them 70-6 at Eden Park, Auckland. The two sides have played a total of fifteen Test matches known by both sides as full games, with New Zealand winning all of them by an average border of 51 points. The two teams have been in the same pool in five of the eight RWC competitions to date.
But have only played each other four times because Typhoon Hagibis triggered their scheduled meeting in the 2019 competition to be cancelled. The first 11 meetings between the two teams since their first clash in 1987 were never played at the same venue, then two tests had been held back to back at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The Italians will be looking to keep their expectations of progressing from the pool phase alive in Lyon. But standing in their way will be mighty New Zealand. At a Rugby World Cup 2023, anything can happen, but is a win too big an ask for Italy?
