Ahead of Qatar Football World Cup Homophobic stimulation in the State remains

In advance of the FIFA World Cup, which is arranged to be held in Qatar this November, there has been extensive debate in the Western media regarding the holding of this competition for the first time in a traditional Muslim country. Among the topics discussed is the worry that LGBT+ fans and players visiting the nation for the World Cup may encounter insight or hostility, given that homosexuality is banned in Qatar.

Ahead of the games, the Qatari management has tried to present Qatar as an accepting and open nation that welcomes all visitors. In a fresh press session in Berlin, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Aal Al-Thani said, in reply to a question about his state's treatment of LGBT visitors during the FIFA World Cup games. We welcome everyone, but also, we assume and we want fans to respect our culture.

However, in the last two years, a homophobic debate has been widely plain in the Qatari media. Recently there were frequent examples of such discourse in the Qatari press and on social media, following the outbreak of the monkeypox virus since an uneven number of cases has supposedly been identified among gay men, and following the event of Muslim Senegalese football player Idrissa Gana Gueye.

The latter, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, a team possessed by a Qatari businessman, declined to wear a shirt presenting the rainbow symbol as part of a drive initiated by the French Football Federation which manages the France World Cup team, causing the federation to take important disciplinary actions against him. The incident flashed a general campaign of support for him in the Arab and Muslim world, including in Qatar.

Criticism was also voiced in the nation against the Qatari broadcasting company Ooredoo, which sponsors PSG, for collaborating with this campaign. Senior associates of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), which is based in Doha and is supported by the Qatari regime, also issued reports accusing homosexuality and supporting the Senegalese player. One IUMS member even wrote that monkeypox is a godly message "warning us to return to the outline of human nature."

Unity with Gueye was also articulated in Qatari press articles, which labelled homosexuality as immoral and as opposed to reason, human nature and the orders of the three monotheistic religions. Qatari journalist Ibtisam Aal Sa'd, a columnist for the Al-Sharq daily, was particularly visible in her homophobic sermon and even tossed a Twitter hashtag calling to keep gays from coming to Qatar for the Football World Cup.

This report gifts some of the homophobic articles and posts circulated recently in the Qatari press and by Qataris on social media. Qatari Emir: Qatar Will Welcome All FIFA World Cup guests, but expects them to respect its culture. As specified, ahead of the games Qatar is trying to present itself as accepting and welcoming, although it is a strictly conservative nation that outlaw’s homosexuality.

In a May 20 joint press session with the German Chancellor in Berlin, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Aal Al-Thani said, in reply to a question about LGBT travellers who may come to Qatar for the games. Each one is welcome in Doha. We do not stop anyone from coming to Doha with any different families, or any different opinions. Qatar is a very welcoming nation. We have millions of people that come and visit our nation and the Football World Cup is a great chance for people from different shares of the world to come and experience our ethos. We will not stop anybody from coming and enjoying the football. But I also want everybody to come and understand and enjoy our values. We welcome everybody, but also, we expect and we want fans to respect our principles.

In her May 26 post in the Qatari daily Al-Arab newspaper, Maryam Yasin Al-Hamadi, head of the culture and arts agency of Qatar's Ministry of Culture, supported these declarations made by the Qatari Emir, writing, in a report expressing Qatar's national uniqueness, the Qatari Emir, said that 'we expect and we want people to respect our culture. This is a short but impressive report.

Each one may have his ethos and art, but someone else may discard some or all of this. So that person does not have to exhibit all these beliefs and behaviours in front of others. A thin line splits acceptable behaviours from unacceptable ones when it comes to respecting the culture and its beliefs, ideas, customs and traditions. When one is a guest, it is gracious to live by values or at least to esteem them.

Qatari reporter introduces Twitter Hashtag, I resist existence of Gays at Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022.

Qatari reporter and influencer Ibtisam Aal Sa'd, who inscribes a column for the state daily newspaper, posted frequent homophobic tweets, many of them in the situation of the Idrissa Gueye affair and the monkeypox epidemic. In one of her tweets, she even uttered concern that her account would be shut down due to her homophobic posts. On May 21 she tossed the Twitter hashtag "I oppose the presence of homosexuals at Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022”, and wrote.

I have a right to easily express what I regard as opposing to the sharia, morality, values, customs and the tradition of society. Record your place using this hashtag. Maybe this will be to your credit on the day they say, where were you during this whole conversation about homosexuality? Aal Sa'd also tweeted, why was there no uproar about homosexuality when the FIFA World Cup was held in Russia.

On the common level, we are allowed to express our hostility to any phenomenon in the Football World Cup that is opposing our religion or our natural inclinations. In another tweet, she mentioned the said statements made by the Qatari Emir at the press conference in Germany specifically that Qatar will welcome all World Cup fans but expects them to respect its culture.

He added, that our culture, which is consequent chiefly from our religion, forbids us to accept sexual parody and homosexuality and to present them as a natural human leaning. We expect the entire world to esteem this culture when visiting Qatar. As part of the drive of solidarity with the Senegalese football player, Aal Sa'd cheeped, Idrissa Gueye, 'I signed an agreement to play football in Paris Saint-Germain, not to promote homosexualism.

This reply persuades reasonable people, but not those who encourage homosexuality, which is rejected by reason and by human nature and which the three monotheistic religions see as a crime. #WeAreAllIdrissaGana. Aal Sa'd also stated her views on this stock in her column in the daily paper, writing on May 22, the day we threw away the masks and started living freely the demon of a new wave, called monkeypox, appeared.

European experts noted that the cases detected were of homosexuals, people who disturb human nature and the values of the three monotheistic faiths, which regard sexual parody of all types as a crime. I am mystified by the widespread discourse about so-called homosexuality, especially after the incident of the Paris Saint-Germain's Muslim player, Idrissa Gana Gueye, who refused to wear a shirt stating support for gay rights.

A dissimilar stance was taken by newspaper columnist ‘Abd Al-'Aziz Al-Khater, who tweeted on June 11, 2022, I do not respect the gay community or the presence of gays at the approaching Qatar Football World Cup as a threat to our culture or faith. This is a global competition we successfully clashed to host, and we accepted the terms for doing so, including that of welcoming associates of this group and of other groups, such as hooligans [i.e., ultras]. This has been [part of] this tournament from its inception, and there is no threat to our culture or religion.
