Portugal has seen nine yellow World Cup record cards in one team, and two dismissals following the second yellow one again. FIFA president Sepp Blatter later suggested that Ivanov should be given a yellow card for his poor performance during the match. Sepp Blatter regretted the remarks and promised to officially apologize.

Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, president of the German Football Association, also defended Ivanov, saying Ivanov was simply enforcing the rules. He noted that the match was not short of referees but teams did not follow the rules of the match. He further added that FIFA had instructed the referee to adhere strictly to the rules governing strikes, jersey handling, and wasting time, adding that this was clarified to all parties.
