The teenager occupies the rest of their childhood working
out in state-of-the-art services, on carpet-like fields, under the instruction
of some of the best nurturers of developing talent the game has to offer.
Colombia Football World Cup player Luis Diaz never had that lavishness.
Not marked by the age of 18, dusty fields on the rural, native Atlantic coast
in Colombia were where he showcased his skills.
That was until he was given a test by his localize big club
one chance to take his spot, and regardless of his physical presence and poor
background, nothing was going to stand in his way, even if he wanted a helping
hand from an iconic, fuzzy-haired legend World Cup player along the way.
The part where he comes from has been forgotten about by the
management, as often happens where coal mining used to be the only owner,
Diaz’s past coach at Colombian Football World Cup team Junior Julio Comesana
tells news. Luis was surely not fortunate to be born there, but his tough
life trained him much. His family had nothing, so he worked for everything. Later,
I go to see his private home and saw the severity he came from. For more

Background and Development
He lived with us in Junior, so we could keep his physique
developing, but he always valued everything anyone did for him due to this upbringing.
From the town of Barrancas close to the Venezuelan border, Diaz came from a
local Wayuu communal of native people, six hours drive from the nearest big
club Junior. One open examination of around 2500 players took place in 2015, deprived
of much hope of finding the next FIFA World Cup superstar, particularly one who
was already boarding on adult life, but the inspecting detectives found a
needle in a haystack.
When I saw FIFA World Cup player Luis Diaz for the first
time it was in the B-team of Barranquilla Junior’s partner club, and my first assumed
was that he was really thin, but he in some way give the impression very
strong, Comesana continues. I thought how had he been selected out, given how
he looked? Such uncertainties over his figure would follow Diaz to this day,
but he has been educated to not only manage, but he also uses his muscular
frame to his benefit.
His build is misleading, World Football Journal’s Portugal writer
Tom Kundert, who covered Diaz during his time at Porto, tells media. He is
a lot tougher than he looks, and has even recorded some excellent shots this
season, getting the better of powerful center-backs. He could always handle
himself. Picked up by Junior, he resisted making an impression in the youth
setup, with disapproval around his build at the vanguard of many of his trainer’s
minds.
Called in Colombia’s Native team for Copa America
Then came that hit of luck even the most gifted of personalities
need to find renown some star demand. Called in Colombia’s team for the
first-ever Copa America for Native Peoples in 2015, Diaz enthralled in the contest,
marking two goals as Colombia got to the final. Diaz’s trainer, Colombia
Football World Cup former player Carlos Valderrama, was won over and give back
to his former club with a shining endorsement removing any lasting uncertainty
over his skills to become one of the few from his needy region to make it as a World
Cup footballer.
If El Pibe says he was good, he must be decent, Comesana
adds. I thought we wanted to get him into the first team arrangement at Junior rapidly
to grow his body but I could see conventional away he had the capability. We
saw it as an excessive opportunity for us. He was a performer with unbelievable
ability but no fat, and we just required him to help him improve in size. Many
were telling me to give up on him, but that wasn’t a possibility for me. Not
with the skill he had.
Now fully mindful of the capacity they had at their removal,
it was a matter of how best to develop this shy, humble, and immature teenager.
Diaz got that first-team taste of football at Barranquilla in Colombia’s second
division in 2016, which brought its challenges, given he was existing with the
club by this point and being fed properly, with nutritional supplements also a
necessity. His talent, however, excelled.
He would be a FIFA World Cup star
Most World Cup players, especially when they are undeveloped,
believe they can do lots of things but are incapable to do them, as they aren’t
good enough yet, Comesana adds. Luis was the opposite. He could do everything,
we just had to influence him that he could. I remember his first game for us at
Junior in the Colombian Cup after his time at Barranquilla, for B-teams,
Comesana says. He played on the right for a while, then the left, then over the
middle. He amazed us with this.
We did not think then he would be a Football World Cup star,
as children like him don’t usually make it, but after his first game for the
first team against Cerro Porteno, we knew he would be. The Porto South American
inspection network again came up trumps as Diaz, four years after kicking balls
around dusty grounds back home, was off to Europe, where he would join a long
line of Latin Americans to use the Portuguese titans as the flawless stepping
stone on the path to bigger and better things.
He displayed flashes of brilliance right from when he contracted
in the summer of 2019, often recording outstanding goals his unforgettable
strike against Manchester City after a long sloping run in the Champions League
and a gymnastic effort against Maritimo come to mind but he was unpredictable, Kundert
added. This season, however, sustained by his adventures in Copa America in the
summer, he went from unpredictable to steadily brilliant.
In its place of doing something eye-catching every three or
four games, he was splendid in nearly every match he played for Porto football
club in 2021-22, often irresistible as proved by the 18 goal helps in 18 games.
Diaz was in action for his country late on Friday night, in a Qatar FIFA World
Cup qualifier against Peru, and he also fly into Buenos Aires on Saturday for
another qualifier against Argentina the following week.
International career
After representing Colombia at the under-20
level in the 2017 South American U-20 Competition, Luis Diaz was
called up to the World Cup team on 27 August 2018, for friendlies against Venezuela
and Argentina. He made his full global entrance on 11 September,
substituting Juan Cuadrado in a 0–0 draw against the latter at
the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Luis Diaz
recorded his first FIFA World Cup goal on 26 March 2019, equalizing in a 2–1
friendly loss away to South Korea.
He was part of Carlos Queiroz's 23-man team for
the 2019 Copa America in Brazil. Luis Diaz was involved in Colombia's
team for the 2021 Copa America. On 23 June, he counted the opening
goal in a 2–1 first-round loss to hosts Brazil with an acrobatic
volley, and on 6 July he recorded their goal in a semi-final draw against
Argentina, which finished in an Argentine victory following a penalty shoot-out.
Three days advanced, he scored double, including the
match-winning goal, in a 3–2 victory over Peru in the third-place game.
He ended as a joint top goalscorer of the competition alongside Lionel
Messi. Liverpool club want him and they knew they couldn’t wait until the
summer to make their transfer, with even Jurgen Klopp being taken
aback by how rapidly the Colombian World Cup player has settled into life in
the Premier League.
Describing him as already looking like a Liverpool player
after just a few working out sessions. And in a team that succeeds on insistent
running and energy, those who know Luis Diaz best feel he could not be in an improved
place to fulfill his doubtful rags to riches story, with the 25-year-old no visitor
to giving every inch of his will for everything that comes his way. I try not
to trouble Luis Diaz too much now, as he is noiseless and doesn’t want to be
talking all day, Comesena says.
He knows that we love him, as he is an example to all
Colombia Football World Cup team players. To have the bravery to work as hard
as he has every day to get where he is, where he is from, is a motivation. You
can tell just how well he is going to fit in by how welcoming Klopp was when he
arrived, with that warmness of affection.
