The federation said Karpin, 52, had agreed to a contract for a year, which could be extended. Federation president Alexander Dyukov said Karpin was one of the best Russian Football players of his generation. He has played very well for both clubs and the national football team, Dyukov said in a statement published on the federation's website.

He added that after completing his career as a player, Karpin gained rich management experience and that coaching the national Football team would be a new challenge for him. Born in Soviet Estonia, Karpin played for Spartak Moscow from 1990 to 1994 and then moved on to Valencia, Celta Vigo, and Real Sociedad of Spain.
